Singled Out | The Intersection | Discover Magazine → blogs.discovermagazine.com

Need to fully read this later…

But on first note, I will say that while I’m not a scientist, I have worked at predominantly male-magazines covering a predominantly male field (technology) so I can relate. When I worked at PM, it got to the point where I wouldn’t even tell guys I met out where I worked because it was either, “Wow! I can’t believe you’re a girl and you’re into science (or engineering or space or whatever)!” My response was almost always “You just put your foot in your mouth, buddy”

“The highly secret CIA research project into the use of mind-altering drugs (code name: MKULTRA) ran from 1953 to 1963. The Soviets had been putting spies on the stand and getting them to confess openly, so the U.S. wanted to develop a similar “truth serum” as well as come up with a way for captured agents to induce amnesia. American spies normally carried a deadly fish toxin to take in case of capture, and the CIA wanted something better, something that would brainwash the captured agent to give the captors disinformation. They gave numerous agents, prostitutes, and civilians spiked cocktails in various safe houses in NYC and San Francisco to record their reactions. LSD was the primary drug experimented with.” —MIND CONTROL

“Yes, the messages are short. But many tweets are just part of some greater content. Tweets direct you to blog posts, breaking news, videos, photos, just about anything you can find on the Net. Remarking on the brevity of these tweets is like pointing out the terseness of tables of contents. In a sense, a lot of tweets are like the listings in a table of contents, signposts to more information, more content.” —Twitter: Gateway to substantive content
